Despite all of their prosperity, the city of Laodicea lacked a quality water supply. As a result, they relied on a combination of nearby sources that produced lukewarm water which was known to be repugnant. Christ uses this to help paint a picture of the local church in this community. They were neither providing refreshment for the spiritually thirsty, not healing the spiritually sick. As a result, Jesus threatens to cast them from His mouth.

It is the will of the Lord that His children experience suffering. For the believer, this is not the exception...but the rule. However, for those who are His, suffering is a gift. In the midst of trial we are able to better distinguish the temporary from the eternal. The Glorified Christ rightly puts all else in perspective. This was true for John on Patmos, and it's true for us today.
